Gift Giving

Japan is a gift giving culture. Giving and receiving gifts are part of every day life and can range from the small and insignificant to the truly impressive. Do not mistake them for bribes, this is rarely the case.

There are two gift giving seasons O-Chugen and O-Seibo in June and December (bonuses), but gifts are often presented on meeting people. The wrapping of gifts is as important as the gift itself and it is worth taking the time to buy good quality wrapping paper.

Most Japanese businessmen will travel with a stock of small gifts just in case they are needed. Company pens, gifts of Scottish produce, wrapped in tartan paper are fine. Avoid books.
